“Keep an open-mind allows for growth”

“Keep an open-mind allows for growth”
I cannot believe I study in University of Yale in 1945. I kick out all the traditional mind that bother me. I have to working hard for my amazing future.
Lisa is me, a 21 years old girl live in a very traditional family with a close-mind. I am really curious to the outside world. My dad is foreign ambassador. He is a open-mind man. He sends me to the high school that own by British government in Beijing. So, I had chance to make lots of foreign friends. One of my best friends is Anna. She is from America and her father has a huge factory in Beijing. Anna is a very nice girl. She told me lots of funny news about America. She also told me how American developed and what happens in their society. At first I cannot believe it. My mind is change a little bit when Anna told me everything about America. I start dreaming about if I can go to University of Yale.
I get a special invitation from Anna when summer vacation is coming. Sunday morning I open my mailbox I find a pink envelope, I open it “Oh my!” I shout. There is an invitation from Anna and her dad. They invite me to go to America with them. I am so excited abut it. At dinner time I declare this exciting news to my family. Suddenly, everyone in my family is quiet. I stand in front of table. I have no idea what I would do and I don’t know what wrong with him. “Lisa, my girl, you can’t go to another country with foreign people. It’s very dangerous. We opposed you go to America. In another hand, you are a Chinese people, why you want go to other country,” my grandfather said. Then my mother leaves without saying a word. When she walk by me, she look at me as a disappoint sight.
“Am I wrong?” I ask myself. I don’t think I’m wrong. The only reason is they still keep traditional mind. I cannot control their mind. My father calls me to his study when I am almost sleeping. I nock the door and I heard I familiar voice “Come in my Lisa, the door is unlocked.” I walk toward him. “Way do you want go to America with Anna? I want know the truth,” he said. “She told me lots of about America. I am curious about America and I also curious about my future. I know close-mind cannot help me anymore. I should challenge myself. Maybe go to a foreign will help me grow,” I answer it. My father look at me and give me a deeply smile “My girl your thought is totally right. I believe go to America you will have lots of experience and you will really grow up. So, I support go to America with Anna.”
Here is America! People are friendly, the city is flourishing and the building is high. I am so exciting to be here. I visit lots of famous place in America with Anna. My mind is totally changed when I arrival America. I accept lifestyle of America. I try to fit it this society. Everyone in American is open-mind, that’s makes me feel comfortable. I made a important decision that I don’t go back to China. I want stay in America. Anna and his father support me. I wrote a letter to my dad. My dad supports me, too. The only sad thing is my traditional family opposed me stay in another country. But they can’t control me. I still keep my open-mind.
“My Lisa, I’m glad you get into University of Yale. You finish my dream. I plan to go to Yale, but I failed. Congratulations, my daughter!” my dad said in the letter. My dream finally comes true. Thanks my best friend Anna. I understand that open-mind can help me grow and open-mind can give success.

  1. hm... why would the dad be opposed to going if that was his dream? That is interesting...
As well.... can you give examples of how Lisa's mind was "totally changed" when she arrived in America? What kind of lifestyles did she have to change to fit in? =)

    Great writing! Keep it up!
